Meet the Ahoy New York Tours & Tasting’s Staff: Liz

About Ahoy New York Food Tours Little Italy

Hi, my name is Elizabeth, but everyone calls me Liz! I am the lead tour guide for Ahoy New York Tours & Tasting, as well as the operations manager, helping to run the day to day aspects of the business. I’ve been working for Ahoy New York since October 2013 and the phrase “time flies when you’re having fun” is spot on! Being a part of the Ahoy team has allowed me to meet so many people from around the world and together we have celebrated our lives through food.

Happy 10th anniversary Ahoy New York Tours & Tasting! Here’s to more happy eating and drinking, tours and laughter, for many more decades to come.

Favorite Cheap Eats Spot in New York City:

As someone pointed out to me once on tour, “ You have a lot of favorites.” Yes, I do! How could I not? So when asked what my favorite cheap eats spot is, I would have to say Gray’s Papaya (2090 Broadway). Still technically cheap eats by NYC standards at a whopping $6.95 for a Recession Special- 2 hot dogs grilled to perfection on a grilled hot dog bun with a tropical drink. I do miss the price it was when I was a kid (aka college student) of $2, but one bite of this juicy, snappy hot dog and one sip of the pineapple drink makes that extra $4.95 mean nothing!

Favorite Fine Dining Restaurant in New York City:

I enjoy eating at Boulud Sud (20 W 64th St), one of many delicious restaurants in Chef Daniel Boulud’s arsenal. They feature refined Mediterranean and French fare. I like to stop in for dinner when I have tickets to the ballet or opera at Lincoln Center. It’s a true treat!

Favorite Guilty Pleasure:

I love a good food hall, market, or festival! If I can go to one place that has a multitude of food options to taste, I am the happiest of campers! My go-to’s are The Queens International Night Market and LIC Flea. Both represent Queens, NY in a brilliant way.

Favorite Thing to Do in New York City:

Most people don’t think of forests, parks, or beaches when they think of NYC. Unless it’s Central Park that is. As much as I love a good walk in Central Park, there is nothing like going to the Rockaways on a hot summer day for some beach fun or walking through the forest in Forest Park, complete with bridle paths… right in the middle of Queens. I grew up going to Flushing Meadows Corona Park and to this day this place is one of my favorite spots to picnic, play, and explore. Oh and eat! If you happen to go to Flushing Meadows, you can’t miss a visit to the Lemon Ice King (52-02 108th St, Corona) for Italian ices. My fave… cherry ice with chunks of cherries!

Best Tip for Visiting New York City:

Be respectful of others. We New Yorkers get a bad rap for being rude, distant, and mean but we’re really not. Unless, you are first. So, if you’re lost or need some help, don’t be afraid to ask and don’t forget to say “thanks!” As many of my guests on tour have mentioned “wow, New Yorkers are actually really nice! You guys are super helpful.” Awww shucks, thanks!
