Planning a trip or staycation in New York City this summer?

Summer officially starts on June 21 but for many, the unofficial start of summer is already here! We are so excited about trying new experiences and trying new dishes this summer. With that in mind, here are 7 fun things to do in New York City for summer 2023.

Take a Photo of Manhattanhenge

Manhattanhenge is when the sunset is aligned with the New York City streets, and it is a great photo opportunity. You can see Manhattanhenge between May 29 – July 13 but this effect is best on July 12 & 13. The best places to take these photos are on larger streets in Midtown like 14th Street, 23rd Street, 34th Street, 42nd Street and 57th Street. We have our cameras ready!

Take Advantage of the Hudson River Park Festivities & Activities

2023 is the 25th anniversary of the Hudson River Park and they have a packed calendar of events and activities like Sunset Salsa, Yoga classes and live music. Similarly, Central Park and Bryant Park also have a ton of free events and activities.

Stroll Along the Coney Island Boardwalk

2023 is the year of big anniversaries as it is also the Coney Island Boardwalk’s 100th anniversary. We love strolling along this picturesque and historic boardwalk whenever the weather is nice. The beach, Luna Park and all the other rides and shops are now open. Also, the Coney Island Mermaid Parade is June 17 this year and that is always a ton of fun.

New York City probably has a million reasons to be outdoors this summer. There are so many outdoor concerts, movie screenings or plays happening almost every day. Some events to keep an eye out for include the Seaport Cinema on the rooftop of Pier 17, the Bryant Park Film Festival, the Big Screen at Hudson Yards to watch sporting events, the Summer Stage Festival and Shakespeare in the Park.

Summer is the perfect time to try something new and even if you tried a new restaurant, cafe or shop every day you wouldn’t even be close to trying it all! One of our favorite ways to explore exciting, new dishes is to go to outdoor food markets like Uptown Night Market, Queens International Night Market, Smorgasburg or Hester Street Fair. Another great time to try new foods is during the NYC Summer Restaurant Week 2023 which is usually between July and August.

Kayaking on the Hudson River & East River

Finally, we are always on the lookout for fun, free things to do in New York City during weekends when the weather is hot and one of our favorite summer activities is kayaking on the Hudson River or East River, offered by the NYC Parks. This is a great way to get unique views of the New York City landmarks and skyline.
